Regional voters backing the Coalition
Author:admin PostTime:2010-06-03
Rural voters are more disillusioned with the Labor Government's performance than those in city areas.
According to today's Nielson poll, Tony Abbott's Coalition is for the first time in the lead with 53 per cent of the vote after preferences, with the Government on 47 per cent.
While 51 per cent of city voters prefer the Coalition, the two party preferred voting intention is 55 per cent in favour of the Liberal-National partnership in rural areas.
In terms of preferred prime minister, Kevin Rudd is still in the lead with 49 per cent of the vote in both city and rural areas.
And while 36 per cent of city voters prefer Tony Abbott as Prime Minister, 42 per cent in rural areas say Mr Abbott is the right person for the job.
The poll shows a surge in votes for the Greens.
A separate Newspoll commissioned by the mining industry shows the Government's proposed tax on resource profits is not sitting well with voters in key marginal seats.
